Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she needed during the days to be able to enjoy art, literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was conscious of social issues and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. While DuVernay lived in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing for television journalism. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home by a member jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was brought on straight after college, as an intern at the studio that was small. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
